2019 Research Awards submissions

The Asian Studies program invites submissions for two 2019 Asian Studies Research Awards. The award is open to University of Alabama undergraduates who have completed an essay, research paper, or creative project that includes a substantial engagement with an aspect of Asia. Beginning this year, we will give two research awards, one in each of two categories, essays that are generally under 10 pages and research projects that involve individual engagement with multiple sources and are generally more substantial (over 10 pages for typical papers). Essays typically come from lower level courses and may be book reviews, response papers, reflective essays, etc., and research papers commonly come from seminar term papers, independent study research, or honors theses. A faculty committee will select the best submission in each category.

Submissions must be received by 11:59 pm on Monday, January 21, 2019. Email submissions as an attachment to asianstudies@as.ua.edu. All submissions must include a cover page with student name, CWID, email address, and a 3-4 sentence summary of the paper or project. For creative projects that are not in a paper format, students should submit a 1-2 page description of the project and its academic basis along with appropriate documentation, such as video, photos, and audio files.

All students are also encouraged to submit research projects to present at the UA Undergraduate Research Symposium and the A&S Research Summit in Spring 2019. The Research Awards (open to all undergraduates at UA) and the Asian Studies Outstanding Student Award (restricted to Asian Studies minors) will be be presented at an Asian Studies event during Honors Week in April 2019.
