2021 Award Winners

Congratulations to Taylor Brewer, Ruth Hallstead, and Aidan Miles-Jamison!
Each year we are thrilled to recognize the exceptional work of our excellent students. Faculty select an Outstanding Student Award winner from current Asian Studies minors and two research award winners out of those who submit their work early in the spring semester. One research award is for the best essay, and the other is for the best research paper.

The 2021 Asian Studies Outstanding Student Award goes to Taylor Brewer. Taylor is an Asian Studies minor with a major in English. She has also studied Korean language at the Capstone and is in Honors College.

The 2021 Asian Studies Research Awards go to Ruth Hallstead (essay) and Aidan Miles-Jamison (research paper). Ruth’s essay “Time Travel and Love” analyzes two film adaptations of the Chinese classic Journey to the West, and was written in Tales from Asia (REL 322) with Prof. Steven Ramey. Aidan’s research paper “Queering the Label” presents a survey of three LGBTQ+ Thai artists oeuvre, develops an indepth analysis of one piece from each artist to discuss several trends and issues in contemporary Thai art. This project was completed in Prof. Doris Sung’s course on South and Southeast Asian art last Fall.

In addition to a cash award, we recognize each awardee on commemorative plaques in Presidents Hall.

Congratulations to all awardees!
